A simple recipe for making crispy, flavorful BBQ chicken wings using an air fryer.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 lbs chicken wings, separated into flats and drumettes
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder (aluminum-free)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 cup your favorite BBQ sauce

Instructions

  1. Pat the chicken wings completely dry using paper towels. This step helps achieve crispiness.
  2. In a large bowl, toss the dried wings with baking powder, salt, pepper, and garlic powder until evenly coated.
  3. Preheat your air fryer to 380°F (195°C) for 5 minutes.
  4. Arrange the wings in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Do not overcrowd the basket; work in batches if necessary.
  5. Air fry for 18 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through the cooking time.
  6. Increase the temperature to 400°F (200°C) and cook for an additional 4 to 6 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C) and the skin is crispy.
  7. Remove the wings from the air fryer and place them in a clean bowl.
  8. Pour the BBQ sauce over the hot wings and toss gently until they are fully coated.
  9. Return the sauced wings to the air fryer basket in a single layer.
  10. Air fry for 2 to 3 minutes at 400°F (200°C) to caramelize the sauce slightly. Watch closely to prevent burning.
  11. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Baking powder is key for drawing out moisture and creating a crisp exterior.
  • Do not sauce the wings until the final minutes of cooking to prevent the sugar in the sauce from burning during the main cook time.
  • For extra smoky flavor, you can add 1/2 teaspoon of smoked paprika to the dry rub mixture.
