Ingredients
Scale
6 medium apples (about 2.5 lbs), peeled, cored, and sliced
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup rolled oats
3/4 cup packed light brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into cubes
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Pour the apple mixture into an 8×8 inch baking dish.
In a separate medium bowl, combine the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, and salt.
Add the cold butter cubes to the oat mixture. Use your fingers or a pastry blender to cut the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Sprinkle the oat topping evenly over the apples in the baking dish.
Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender and bubbly.
Let the apple crisp cool for at least 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
For a firmer topping, chill the topping mixture for 15 minutes before sprinkling it over the apples.
Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for an extra treat.
You can use a mix of apple varieties for a more complex flavor.
