Ingredients
Scale
1 cup warm milk (105-115°F or 40-46°C)
2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
¼ cup granulated sugar
1 large egg, room temperature
⅓ cup unsalted butter, melted
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 ½ cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
For the Filling:
¾ cup packed light brown sugar
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 large apple, peeled, cored, and finely diced (about 1 cup)
For the Glaze:
1 cup powdered sugar
2-3 tablespoons milk
½ teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
In a large bowl, combine the warm milk, yeast, and granulated sugar. Let stand for 5-10 minutes, until foamy.
Whisk in the egg, melted butter, and vanilla extract.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and ½ teaspoon cinnamon.
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
While the dough rises, prepare the filling. In a medium bowl, combine brown sugar, 2 tablespoons flour, and 1 ½ teaspoons cinnamon. Stir in the diced apple.
Once the dough has risen, punch it down and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Roll the dough into a 12×18 inch rectangle.
Spread the apple filling evenly over the dough, leaving a ½ inch border.
Starting from the long edge, tightly roll up the dough. Pinch the seam to seal.
Cut the roll into 12 equal slices.
Place the slices in a greased 9×13 inch baking dish. Cover and let rise for another 30-45 minutes.
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
While the rolls are baking, prepare the glaze. Whisk together powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Add more milk if needed to reach desired consistency.
Drizzle the glaze over the warm rolls.
Notes
For best results, use fresh apples.
You can add chopped nuts like walnuts or pecans to the filling for extra texture.
Ensure your milk is the correct temperature for the yeast to activate properly.
