Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package (0.25 ounce) active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water (105-115°F)
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • For the Filling:
  • 2 cups finely diced apples (about 2 medium)
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
  • For the Glaze:
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2-3 tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Let stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large bowl, combine milk, granulated sugar, softened butter, egg, and vanilla extract. Stir until butter is mostly melted.
  3. Add the foamy yeast mixture to the wet ingredients.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, cinnamon, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a dough forms.
  6. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  7. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  8. While the dough rises, prepare the filling. In a medium bowl, combine diced apples, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice. Mix well.
  9. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface.
  10. Roll the dough into a 12×18 inch rectangle.
  11. Spread the apple filling evenly over the dough, leaving a small border on one long edge.
  12. Starting from the long edge with the filling, tightly roll up the dough. Pinch the seam to seal.
  13. Cut the roll into 12 equal slices.
  14. Place the slices, cut-side up, in a greased 9×13 inch baking dish.
  15. Cover the dish and let the rolls rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  16. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  17. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
  18. While the rolls are baking, prepare the glaze. Whisk together powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Add more milk if needed for desired consistency.
  19. Remove rolls from the oven and let them cool slightly before drizzling with the glaze.

Notes

  • For softer apples, you can lightly sauté the diced apples with a tablespoon of butter and a pinch of sugar before adding them to the filling mixture.
  • Ensure your milk and water are at the correct temperatures to activate the yeast properly.
  • Do not over-knead the dough, as this can result in tough rolls.
  • Allowing the dough to rise in a warm, draft-free spot will help it double in size more effectively.
  • If you prefer a thicker glaze, use less milk. If you prefer a thinner glaze, add a touch more milk.
