Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound Ziti pasta
  • 1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage
  • 1 (24 ounce) jar marinara sauce
  • 1 (15 ounce) container ricotta cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese, plus more for topping
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Cook the ziti according to package directions until al dente. Drain the pasta well.
  3. In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground meat. Drain off any excess fat.
  4. Stir in the marinara sauce and oregano to the meat. Simmer for 5 minutes.
  5. In a medium bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, parsley, salt, and pepper. Mix until smooth.
  6. In a large bowl, combine the drained pasta, the meat sauce, and the ricotta mixture. Stir gently until everything is evenly coated.
  7. Spread half of the pasta mixture into the prepared baking dish.
  8. Sprinkle one cup of the mozzarella cheese over the first layer.
  9. Top with the remaining pasta mixture.
  10. Sprinkle the remaining one cup of mozzarella cheese and extra Parmesan cheese over the top.
  11. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the edges are lightly browned.
  12. Let the ziti rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • You can substitute Italian sausage for ground beef for a richer flavor.
  • For an extra cheesy layer, add a thin slice of provolone cheese under the top layer of mozzarella.
  • If you prefer a less saucy bake, reduce the marinara sauce to 20 ounces.
