Follow this recipe to make crispy, cheesy Chicken Parmesan baked in the oven with a simple marinara sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, pounded to 1/2 inch thickness
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 1/2 cups plain breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese, plus more for topping
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 cups marinara sauce
  • 8 ounces fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced
  • Fresh basil leaves, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (200 degrees Celsius). Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Set up a standard breading station with three shallow dishes. Place flour in the first dish. Whisk eggs in the second dish. In the third dish, combine breadcrumbs, 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, oregano, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  3. Dredge each chicken cutlet first in the flour, shaking off excess. Dip it into the egg mixture, allowing excess to drip off. Finally, press the cutlet firmly into the breadcrumb mixture to coat both sides completely.
  4. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Pan-fry the breaded chicken cutlets for 2 to 3 minutes per side until golden brown. You may need to work in batches. The chicken will not be fully cooked at this stage.
  5. Spread about 1/2 cup of marinara sauce evenly over the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Arrange the browned chicken cutlets in a single layer over the sauce.
  6. Spoon about 2 tablespoons of marinara sauce over the top of each chicken cutlet. Top each piece with slices of mozzarella cheese and a sprinkle of extra Parmesan cheese.
  7. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through (internal temperature reaches 165 degrees Fahrenheit) and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  8. Let the Chicken Parmesan rest for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil.

Notes

  • For extra crispiness, you can lightly spray the tops of the breaded chicken with cooking spray before baking.
  • Serve this dish over cooked spaghetti or alongside a simple green salad.
  • You can substitute jarred marinara sauce for homemade to save preparation time.
