Transform leftover chocolate babka into a rich, custardy bread pudding. This recipe is perfect for a decadent dessert that uses up stale bread.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound chocolate babka, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Optional: 1/2 cup chocolate chips
  • Optional: powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Butter a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Spread the babka cubes evenly in the prepared baking dish. If using, sprinkle chocolate chips over the babka.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until well combined.
  4. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the babka cubes in the baking dish. Gently press down on the babka to ensure it soaks up the custard.
  5. Let the mixture sit for at least 15 minutes, or up to 30 minutes, to allow the babka to absorb the custard.
  6. Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the pudding is set and the top is golden brown. A knife inserted near the center should come out clean.
  7. Let the bread pudding cool for at least 10 minutes before serving.
  8. Dust with powdered sugar, if desired, before serving.

Notes

  • For an extra rich pudding, you can use half-and-half instead of milk.
  • If your babka is very fresh, you might want to toast the cubes lightly before assembling the pudding.
  • Serve warm with whipped cream or ice cream for an extra treat.
