Ingredients
Scale
4 large firm apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 cup water
Instructions
Peel, core, and slice the apples into 1/4-inch thick pieces.
Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
Add the apple slices to the skillet. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they begin to soften slightly.
In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar and cinnamon together.
Sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture over the apples. Stir to coat evenly.
Pour the water into the skillet. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
Reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet, and cook for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the apples are completely tender. Stir once halfway through cooking.
Remove the lid and cook for 1 to 2 minutes more if you prefer a thicker sauce. Serve warm.
Notes
Choose firm apples that hold their shape well during cooking.
You can substitute maple syrup for some of the brown sugar for a different flavor profile.
For a richer taste, use a mix of butter and coconut oil instead of just butter.
