Ingredients

  • All-purpose flour: 2 1/4 cups
  • Baking soda: 1 teaspoon
  • Ground cinnamon (for batter): 1 teaspoon
  • Ground nutmeg: 1/2 teaspoon
  • Ground cloves: 1/4 teaspoon
  • Salt: 1 teaspoon
  • Granulated sugar: 1 cup
  • Light brown sugar, packed: 1 cup
  • Eggs, large: 3
  • Vegetable oil: 1 cup
  • Pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling): 1 15-ounce can (about 1 3/4 cups)
  • Ground cinnamon (for swirl): 2 tablespoons
  • Granulated sugar (for swirl): 1/4 cup
  • Melted butter (for swirl): 3 tablespoons

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour a standard 9×5 inch loaf pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt. Set this dry mix aside.
  3. In a separate large bowl, whisk together the 1 cup granulated sugar, brown sugar, eggs, oil, and pumpkin puree until well combined.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet ingredients. Mix only until just combined. Do not overmix the batter.
  5. Prepare the cinnamon swirl: In a small bowl, mix the 2 tablespoons cinnamon, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, and melted butter until crumbly.
  6. Pour half of the pumpkin batter into your prepared loaf pan.
  7. Sprinkle half of the cinnamon swirl mixture evenly over the batter layer.
  8. Top with the remaining pumpkin batter.
  9. Sprinkle the remaining swirl mixture over the top layer. Gently use a knife or skewer to create swirls, being careful not to cut deep into the bottom layer.
  10. Bake for 55 to 65 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  11. Let the bread cool in the pan for 15 minutes before carefully turning it out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Use pure pumpkin puree, not pumpkin pie filling, for correct moisture levels.
  • Avoid overmixing the batter to maintain a tender crumb.
  • Cool the bread fully before slicing for the best texture.
