Achieve pillowy gnocchi coated in a rich, velvety tomato basil sauce. This recipe delivers exceptional comfort food flavor with weeknight simplicity.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound potato gnocchi
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves, chopped
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese, plus more for serving
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Cook gnocchi according to package directions until they float. Drain and set aside.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add minced garlic and cook for one minute until fragrant. Do not brown the garlic.
  3. Pour in crushed tomatoes and sugar. Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer. Cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Reduce heat to low. Stir in heavy cream until the sauce is smooth and creamy.
  5. Add the cooked gnocchi to the sauce. Toss gently to coat everything evenly.
  6. Stir in the chopped fresh basil and Parmesan cheese. Mix just until combined.
  7. Season with salt and black pepper to your preference.
  8. Serve immediately topped with extra Parmesan cheese.

Notes

  • Using fresh, good quality crushed tomatoes makes a big difference in the final flavor.
  • If the sauce seems too thick, add a splash of the reserved pasta water when tossing the gnocchi.
  • You can substitute half-and-half for heavy cream for a slightly lighter sauce, though it will be less rich.
