Ingredients
Scale
1 pound ground beef
1 medium onion, chopped
1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed cream of chicken soup
1 (10.5 ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup
1 cup sour cream
1 cup milk
1 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided
1 (4 ounce) bag Nacho Cheese Flavored Tortilla Chips (Doritos), crushed into coarse crumbs
1 cup water
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
Brown the ground beef and chopped onion in a large skillet over medium heat. Drain off any excess grease completely.
Stir the cream of chicken soup, cream of mushroom soup, sour cream, milk, chili powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper into the skillet with the meat mixture. Cook until heated through, stirring constantly.
Stir in 1 cup of the shredded cheddar cheese and the 1 cup of water until the cheese melts and the mixture is smooth.
Spread the meat mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish.
In a separate bowl, toss the crushed Doritos with the remaining 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese. This step helps keep the topping from getting too soggy.
Sprinkle the Dorito and cheese mixture evenly over the top of the casserole.
Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the casserole is bubbly and the topping is golden brown.
Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving.
Notes
To keep your Dorito topping crunchy, mix the crushed chips with a little extra cheese before sprinkling them on top. The fat in the cheese helps insulate the chips from the wet filling.
You can substitute ground turkey or shredded cooked chicken for the ground beef for a different flavor profile.
For a spicier kick, add 1/4 cup of drained diced green chiles to the meat mixture.
