Enjoy the classic flavors of egg rolls in a simple, low-carb bowl. This recipe features savory ground meat, crisp cabbage, and a delicious Asian-inspired sauce, all without the wrapper.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground pork or chicken
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 cup chopped yellow onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce or tamari
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup (optional, for sweetness)
  • 1 teaspoon sriracha or other hot sauce (optional)
  • 4 cups shredded cabbage (about 1/2 medium head)
  • 1 cup shredded carrots
  • 1/2 cup chopped green onions
  • Sesame seeds for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat sesame oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat.
  2. Add ground meat and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned. Drain excess fat.
  3. Add chopped onion to the skillet and cook until softened, about 3-5 minutes.
  4. Stir in minced garlic and grated ginger, and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  5. In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, rice vinegar, honey (if using), and sriracha (if using).
  6. Add shredded cabbage and carrots to the skillet. Stir-fry for 3-5 minutes until vegetables are tender-crisp.
  7. Pour the sauce over the meat and vegetables. Toss to combine and cook for another 1-2 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.
  8. Stir in chopped green onions.
  9. Serve hot, garnished with sesame seeds if desired.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian option, use crumbled firm tofu or tempeh instead of ground meat.
  • Adjust the amount of sriracha to your preferred spice level.
  • Tamari can be used as a gluten-free alternative to soy sauce.
