Ingredients
Scale
1 loaf (1 pound) challah or brioche bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
8 large eggs
3 cups eggnog
1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Butter, for greasing
Whipped cream and extra nutmeg, for serving (optional)
Instructions
Butter a 9×13 inch baking dish.
Spread the bread cubes evenly in the prepared baking dish.
In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, eggnog, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, salt, and vanilla extract until well combined.
Pour the eggnog mixture evenly over the bread cubes, ensuring all pieces are moistened. Press down gently to help the bread absorb the liquid.
Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight.
When ready to bake, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Remove the plastic wrap and bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the bake is puffed, golden brown, and set in the center. A knife inserted into the center should come out clean.
Let the bake cool for a few minutes before serving.
Serve warm, topped with whipped cream and a sprinkle of extra nutmeg, if desired.
Notes
Using day-old bread is best as it will absorb the custard mixture better.
You can make this bake up to 2 days in advance. Just cover and keep refrigerated.
Adjust the spices to your preference.
For a richer flavor, use a high-quality eggnog.
