You will make rich, gooey chocolate peanut butter bars. This layered dessert uses simple ingredients for a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. Follow these steps for perfectly soft, indulgent bars.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup creamy peanut butter, divided
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×13 inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on the sides for easy removal.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, mixing on low speed until just combined.
  4. Add the vanilla extract and eggs, mixing until incorporated.
  5. Stir in 3/4 cup of the creamy peanut butter until evenly distributed in the dough.
  6. Press about two-thirds of the dough mixture evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan to form the base layer.
  7. In a small microwave-safe bowl, combine the chocolate chips and the remaining 1/4 cup of peanut butter. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until smooth.
  8. Pour the melted chocolate peanut butter mixture over the base layer and spread it evenly.
  9. Crumble the remaining one-third of the dough mixture over the chocolate layer.
  10. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden and the center seems set.
  11. Let the bars cool completely in the pan on a wire rack. This step is important for clean cutting.
  12. Once cool, sift the powdered sugar evenly over the top.
  13. Lift the bars out of the pan using the parchment paper overhang. Cut into squares.

Notes

  • Make sure your butter is truly softened, not melted, for the best base texture.
  • Do not overbake; these bars should remain gooey in the center for the best result.
  • For an extra flavor boost, use room temperature eggs.
  • Cool the bars fully before slicing, or the layers will smear.
