Ingredients
Scale
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup water
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 cup boiling water
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch square baking pan.
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, 1/4 cup cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
Add the water, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined. The batter will be thin.
Pour the batter evenly into the prepared baking pan.
In a separate small bowl, whisk together the brown sugar and 1/4 cup cocoa powder. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the batter in the pan.
Carefully pour the 1 cup of boiling water over the entire pan. Do not stir.
Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the cake is set and the edges are firm. The pudding sauce will form on the bottom.
Let the cake cool slightly before serving. It is best served warm.
Notes
Serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for an extra treat.
Ensure the boiling water is poured gently to avoid disturbing the layers too much.
