Make a savory Italian herb and cheese bread using your bread machine. This recipe yields a loaf suitable for sandwiches or serving with dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup water (warm, 80-90°F)
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups bread flour
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Add the warm water and butter to the bread machine pan in the order specified by your machine’s manual.
  2. Add the bread flour, sugar, salt, rosemary, oregano, and garlic powder on top of the liquid ingredients.
  3. Make a small well in the center of the flour and add the yeast. Do not let the yeast touch the salt or liquid yet.
  4. Select the Basic or White Bread cycle and choose a Medium or Light crust setting. Start the machine.
  5. Wait until the machine enters the kneading phase. If your machine has a delayed addition chute for mix-ins, wait until the machine signals for the addition of mix-ins (usually about 5-10 minutes into the first knead).
  6. Add the shredded Parmesan cheese through the mix-in chute or carefully open the lid during the first knead and sprinkle the cheese evenly over the dough, then close the lid quickly.
  7. Allow the machine to complete the full cycle.
  8. Once the cycle is finished, carefully remove the hot bread pan from the machine.
  9. Turn the loaf out onto a wire rack immediately and let it cool completely before slicing.

Notes

  • For best results, use the ‘Basic’ or ‘White Bread’ cycle for a standard sandwich loaf shape.
  • If your machine does not have a mix-in dispenser, add the cheese during the last 5 minutes of the first kneading cycle.
  • Allow the loaf to cool for at least one hour before slicing to prevent a gummy texture.
