Create a delicious Japanese Teriyaki Tofu Rice Bowl with this easy-to-follow recipe. Perfect for a healthy and flavorful vegetarian meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 block (14-16 oz) extra-firm tofu, pressed and cubed
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon mirin (Japanese sweet rice wine)
  • 1 tablespoon sake (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • Cooked rice, for serving
  • Optional toppings: sesame seeds, chopped green onions, steamed broccoli, shredded carrots

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, mirin, sake (if using), sugar, grated ginger, and minced garlic. This is your teriyaki sauce.
  2. In a large skillet or wok, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat.
  3. Add the pressed and cubed tofu to the hot skillet. Cook until golden brown and slightly crispy on all sides, about 8-10 minutes.
  4. Pour the prepared teriyaki sauce over the tofu. Stir gently to coat the tofu evenly.
  5. Continue to cook for another 2-3 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken and glaze the tofu.
  6. Serve the teriyaki tofu immediately over cooked rice.
  7. Add your favorite optional toppings like sesame seeds, green onions, broccoli, or carrots.

Notes

  • Pressing the tofu is crucial for achieving a good texture. You can use a tofu press or wrap the tofu in paper towels and place a heavy object on top for at least 30 minutes.
  • For a sweeter sauce, add an extra teaspoon of sugar.
  • If you don’t have mirin or sake, you can substitute with a tablespoon of white wine or apple cider vinegar and adjust the sugar accordingly.
