This old-fashioned apple crisp recipe is a warm and cozy dessert that’s easier to make than pie. It features tender, cinnamon-spiced apples topped with a crunchy, buttery crumble. Perfect for a comforting treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 medium apples (about 2.5 lbs), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
  • 1/2 cup old-fashioned rolled oats

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Pour the apple mixture into an 8×8 inch baking dish.
  3. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the flour, brown sugar, baking soda, and salt.
  4. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. Stir in the rolled oats.
  6. Sprinkle the oat mixture evenly over the apples in the baking dish.
  7. Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender and bubbly.
  8. Let the crisp cool for at least 10-15 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for an extra special treat.
  • You can use a mix of apple varieties for a more complex flavor.
  • If you don’t have rolled oats, you can omit them.
