You need this easy dirt cake recipe! We fixed the common pitfalls to bring you the best no-bake Oreo dessert, layered with creamy pudding, a rich filling, and plenty of crushed Oreos for that perfect ‘dirt’ texture. It is a potluck favorite.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 (12 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed
  • 2 (3.4 ounce) packages instant chocolate pudding mix
  • 3 cups cold milk
  • 1 (14.3 ounce) package Oreo cookies (about 36 cookies), crushed
  • 1 (8 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed (for topping)
  • Extra Oreo cookies, crushed (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, beat the softened cream cheese, softened butter, and powdered sugar together until the mixture is smooth and creamy. This is your base layer filling.
  2. Gently fold in 1 cup of the thawed whipped topping into the cream cheese mixture until just combined. Set this mixture aside.
  3. In a separate large bowl, whisk together the instant chocolate pudding mix and the cold milk for about two minutes, or until the mixture begins to thicken. Let it stand for five minutes.
  4. Gently fold the remaining 1 cup of thawed whipped topping into the thickened pudding mixture.
  5. Take about two-thirds of the crushed Oreo cookies and mix them into the pudding mixture until they are evenly distributed. This creates the main ‘dirt’ layer.
  6. In a large trifle dish or 9×13 inch pan, create the first layer by spreading half of the Oreo-pudding mixture evenly across the bottom.
  7. Spread the entire cream cheese mixture evenly over the pudding layer.
  8. Top the cream cheese layer with the remaining half of the Oreo-pudding mixture. Smooth the top gently.
  9. Spread the remaining 8 ounces of thawed whipped topping over the top layer.
  10. Sprinkle the reserved crushed Oreo cookies over the whipped topping to resemble dirt.
  11. Cover the dish and chill in the refrigerator for at least four hours, or preferably overnight, before serving. This allows the layers to set properly.

Notes

  • For the best texture, crush your Oreos in a food processor, but leave some larger chunks for visual appeal.
  • If you want a richer flavor, substitute one package of instant chocolate pudding with instant vanilla or cookies and cream pudding.
  • To make this a fun, kid-friendly dessert, serve individual portions in clear plastic cups, layering the ingredients just as you would in the large dish.
