Enjoy a family-friendly twist on a classic with Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes. This easy skillet recipe features ground beef simmered in a savory sauce, served on soft buns.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 6-8 hoagie buns
  • Optional toppings: sliced provolone cheese, sautéed mushrooms, extra onions

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Add ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned. Drain off excess fat.
  3. Add chopped onion and green bell pepper to the skillet. Cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Stir in minced garlic, salt, black pepper, oregano, and red pepper flakes (if using). Cook for 1 minute more until fragrant.
  5. Pour in beef broth, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and yellow mustard. Stir to combine.
  6. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce heat to low and cook for 10-15 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken slightly.
  7. While the sauce simmers, toast the hoagie buns if desired.
  8. Spoon the Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joe mixture into the buns. Add optional toppings like provolone cheese or sautéed mushrooms.
  9. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, add more red pepper flakes.
  • You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for ground beef.
  • If you don’t have hoagie buns, regular hamburger buns will also work.
