Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 firm pears (like Bosc or Anjou), peeled, halved, and cored
  • 4 cups water
  • 2 green tea bags
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 3 star anise
  • 1 strip lemon peel

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, combine water, sugar, cinnamon stick, star anise, and lemon peel. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
  2. Add the green tea bags to the simmering liquid and steep for 5 minutes. Remove the tea bags.
  3. Gently place the pear halves into the green tea syrup. Ensure they are submerged.
  4. Cover the saucepan and simmer gently for 15-25 minutes, or until the pears are tender when pierced with a fork. Cooking time will vary depending on the ripeness of the pears.
  5. Carefully remove the pears from the poaching liquid. You can serve them warm or chilled.
  6. Optionally, reduce the poaching liquid by simmering uncovered for another 5-10 minutes to create a syrup to drizzle over the pears.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, you can add a few cloves or a vanilla bean to the poaching liquid.
  • If you prefer a less sweet dessert, reduce the amount of sugar.
  • Ensure the pears are firm but ripe to prevent them from becoming too soft during poaching.
