Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups peeled and chopped apples (about 4 medium apples)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1/4 cup flaky sea salt, for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  6. Press about two-thirds of the dough evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking pan.
  7. In a medium bowl, toss the chopped apples with 1/2 cup granulated sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice.
  8. Spread the apple mixture evenly over the dough in the pan.
  9. Dollop spoonfuls of the caramel sauce over the apple layer.
  10. Crumble the remaining one-third of the dough over the caramel and apples.
  11. Bake for 40-50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.
  12. Let the bars cool completely in the pan on a wire rack.
  13. Sprinkle the tops generously with flaky sea salt.
  14. Cut into bars and serve.

Notes

  • For homemade caramel sauce, melt 1 cup of granulated sugar in a saucepan over medium heat until amber. Slowly whisk in 1/2 cup heavy cream and 4 tablespoons of butter. Stir until smooth.
  • Make sure your apples are chopped into relatively small, uniform pieces for even cooking.
  • Allow the bars to cool completely before cutting to ensure they hold their shape.
