Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Cupcakes:
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • For the Salted Maple Buttercream:
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup pure maple syrup
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons milk (or more, as needed)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 12-cup muffin tin with paper liners.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Divide the batter evenly among the prepared muffin cups, filling each about two-thirds full.
  7. Bake for 18-22 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center of a cupcake comes out clean.
  8. Let the cupcakes cool in the tin for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. While the cupcakes cool, prepare the frosting. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy.
  10. Gradually add the powdered sugar, mixing until combined.
  11. Pour in the maple syrup and salt. Beat until smooth and well combined.
  12. Add milk, one tablespoon at a time, beating until the frosting reaches your desired spreading consistency.
  13. Once the cupcakes are completely cool, frost them generously with the salted maple buttercream.

Notes

  • Ensure your butter and eggs are at room temperature for best results.
  • For a stronger maple flavor, use dark or amber maple syrup.
  • Adjust the salt in the frosting to your preference.
