Make tender, flavorful meatballs coated in a glossy, sweet, and tangy orange glaze. This recipe takes inspiration from popular takeout dishes, offering a fantastic homemade version.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb Ground Chicken or Turkey
  • 1/2 cup Panko Breadcrumbs
  • 1 large Egg
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon Fresh Ginger, grated
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon Black Pepper
  • 1/4 cup Orange Juice, fresh
  • 1/4 cup Honey
  • 2 tablespoons Soy Sauce (or Tamari for gluten-free)
  • 1 tablespoon Rice Vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon Orange Zest
  • 1 teaspoon Cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon cold water (slurry)
  • Vegetable Oil for cooking
  • Sesame Seeds and sliced Green Onions for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, gently combine the ground chicken, Panko breadcrumbs, egg, minced garlic, grated ginger, salt, and pepper. Do not overmix.
  3. Roll the mixture into uniform one-inch meatballs. Place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  4. Bake the meatballs for 15-18 minutes, or until they are cooked through and lightly browned.
  5. While the meatballs bake, prepare the glaze. In a small saucepan, whisk together the orange juice, honey, soy sauce, rice vinegar, and orange zest.
  6. Bring the sauce mixture to a simmer over medium heat.
  7. Whisk the cornstarch slurry once more and slowly pour it into the simmering sauce, stirring constantly until the sauce thickens to a glossy glaze, about 1 minute. Remove from heat.
  8. Transfer the cooked meatballs to a large skillet over medium heat. Pour the orange glaze over the meatballs.
  9. Toss gently to coat every meatball evenly in the sticky sauce. Cook for 1-2 minutes until the glaze is hot and perfectly coats the meatballs.
  10. Serve immediately garnished with sesame seeds and sliced green onions.

Notes

  • For the best texture, handle the meat mixture lightly when forming the balls.
  • Freshly squeezed orange juice yields the brightest flavor for the glaze.
  • If you prefer baked meatballs only, skip step 6 and bake them for an extra 5 minutes until internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).
