Make tender, flavorful Swedish meatballs with a rich, creamy gravy at home. This recipe is a copycat of the popular IKEA version, perfect for a comforting meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound ground pork
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, ground pork, panko breadcrumbs, milk, chopped onion, egg, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Mix gently until just combined. Do not overmix.
  2. Roll the mixture into 1-inch meatballs.
  3. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  4. Add meatballs to the skillet in batches, being careful not to overcrowd. Brown on all sides. Remove meatballs from the skillet and set aside.
  5. Reduce heat to medium. Add flour to the skillet and whisk to combine with the drippings. Cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
  6. Gradually whisk in beef broth until smooth.
  7. Bring the gravy to a simmer, then stir in heavy cream, Dijon mustard, and soy sauce.
  8. Return the meatballs to the skillet. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until meatballs are cooked through and the gravy has thickened.
  9. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired before serving.

Notes

  • For best results, use a mix of ground beef and ground pork.
  • Do not overmix the meatball mixture, as this can result in tough meatballs.
  • Ensure meatballs are browned well on all sides for maximum flavor.
  • Adjust gravy consistency by simmering longer to thicken or adding a little more broth to thin.
