Transform your usual taco night with this Taco Braid. It takes familiar taco fillings and wraps them in a fun, shareable, and easy-to-eat braided bread crust. This recipe makes family dinner simple and appealing to everyone.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 packet taco seasoning
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
  • 2 cans (8 ounces each) refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Brown the ground beef in a skillet over medium heat. Drain any excess fat.
  3. Stir in the taco seasoning and water. Simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  4. Unroll both cans of crescent roll dough onto a clean surface. Separate the dough into 16 triangles.
  5. Arrange 8 triangles in a cross shape on the prepared baking sheet, overlapping the wider ends slightly to form a circle base. Leave a 4-inch empty space in the center.
  6. Spoon the cooled taco meat mixture over the center of the dough arrangement. Sprinkle the combined cheddar and Monterey Jack cheese evenly over the meat.
  7. Fold the outer points of the dough triangles up and over the filling, overlapping them slightly to create a braided edge around the filling. You should have a circle of filling surrounded by a ring of dough.
  8. Take the remaining 8 triangles and cut each one lengthwise into three strips. You will have 24 thin strips.
  9. Braid three strips together to create a rope. Place these ropes around the edge of the filling, pressing the ends into the edge of the base dough to seal. Continue braiding and placing ropes until the entire filling is encircled.
  10. Brush the entire dough surface with the beaten egg wash.
  11. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the dough is golden brown and cooked through.
  12. Let cool for 5 minutes before slicing and serving with your favorite taco toppings.

Notes

  • Serve with sour cream, salsa, or guacamole for dipping.
  • You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for the ground beef.
  • For extra flavor, add 1/4 cup of chopped green chilies to the meat mixture.
