This recipe delivers an impressive homemade loaf with a crisp crust and soft interior, making you look like an experienced baker with simple steps.

Ingredients

  • All-Purpose Flour: 3 cups
  • Instant Yeast: 1 teaspoon
  • Salt: 1.5 teaspoons
  • Warm Water (105-115F): 1.5 cups
  • Olive Oil: 1 tablespoon

Instructions

  1. Combine flour, yeast, and salt in a large bowl.
  2. Pour in warm water and olive oil.
  3. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
  4. Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface.
  5. Knead for 8 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  6. Place dough in an oiled bowl, turning once to coat.
  7. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled.
  8. Gently punch down the dough.
  9. Shape the dough into a tight round loaf.
  10. Place the loaf on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  11. Cover loosely and let rise for 30 to 45 minutes.
  12. Preheat your oven to 425F (220C) with a baking stone or heavy pan inside for at least 30 minutes.
  13. Score the top of the loaf with a sharp knife.
  14. Carefully transfer the loaf to the preheated stone or pan.
  15. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, until deep golden brown and hollow sounding when tapped.
  16. Cool completely on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

  • Use warm water that is not too hot, or you will kill the yeast.
  • For an extra crisp crust, spritz the oven walls with water during the first 5 minutes of baking.
  • Do not slice the bread until it is completely cool; the interior structure is still setting.
