This recipe delivers an exceptionally moist chocolate chip banana bread using simple steps. You will achieve a rich, tender loaf every time.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups mashed very ripe bananas (about 3 large)
  • 1/4 cup sour cream or plain full-fat yogurt
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×5 inch loaf pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar with an electric mixer until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.
  4. Beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Mix in the mashed bananas and sour cream until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed until just incorporated. A few streaks of flour are acceptable.
  7. Gently fold in the chocolate chips.
  8. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan.
  9. Bake for 55 to 65 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean or with moist crumbs attached.
  10. Let the bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes before carefully turning it out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Use bananas that are heavily spotted or almost black for the best flavor and moisture.
  • Do not overmix the batter once you add the flour; this develops gluten and makes the bread tough.
  • For an extra moist top crust, you can sprinkle a tablespoon of coarse sugar over the batter before baking.
