Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed tomato soup
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 head cabbage, shredded (about 6 cups)
  • 1 cup cooked white rice

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef and chopped onion over medium-high heat until the beef is browned and the onion is softened. Drain off any excess grease.
  3. Stir in the minced garlic, salt, pepper, and paprika. Cook for 1 minute more until fragrant.
  4. Add the tomato sauce, condensed tomato soup, water, Worcestershire sauce, sugar, basil, and oregano to the skillet. Stir to combine.
  5. Bring the sauce mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low and let it cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. In a greased 9×13 inch baking dish, layer half of the shredded cabbage.
  7. Spread the cooked ground beef mixture evenly over the cabbage.
  8. Scatter the cooked rice over the beef mixture.
  9. Top with the remaining shredded cabbage.
  10. Pour the remaining sauce from the skillet evenly over the top layer of cabbage.
  11. Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil.
  12. Bake for 45 minutes.
  13. Remove the foil and bake for another 15 minutes, or until the cabbage is tender and the casserole is bubbly.
  14. Let it rest for 5-10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use a can of diced tomatoes with Italian seasoning in place of the tomato sauce.
  • If you prefer a bit of heat, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the sauce.
  • Leftovers store well in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
