Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 cup cooked white rice
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 head shredded or chopped cabbage

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, cooked rice, chopped onion, milk, egg, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Mix well.
  3. Press the beef mixture evenly into the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the tomato sauce, water, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, paprika, basil, and oregano.
  5. Pour the tomato sauce mixture evenly over the beef layer.
  6. Top with the shredded or chopped cabbage, spreading it evenly.
  7. Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil.
  8. Bake for 45 minutes.
  9. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cabbage is tender and the casserole is heated through.
  10. Let it rest for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a spicier version, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the sauce.
  • You can use leftover cooked rice or cook fresh rice for this recipe.
  • If you prefer a softer cabbage texture, cover and bake for the full 60 minutes. For a slightly crisper texture, remove the foil earlier.
  • This casserole freezes well. Let it cool completely before freezing.
