Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Red food coloring
  • Slivered almonds (for fingernails)

Instructions

  1. Cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  5. Divide the dough into two portions. Tint one portion with red food coloring to resemble skin.
  6. Shape the uncolored dough into finger shapes, about 4-5 inches long and 1/2 inch thick.
  7. Gently press a slivered almond into one end of each cookie to create a fingernail.
  8. Use a knife to score lines on the dough to resemble knuckles.
  9. Place the cookies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  10. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
  11. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • For an extra creepy look, you can add a drop of green food coloring to the red dough for a mottled effect.
  • Chill the dough for 30 minutes before shaping if it becomes too soft.
  • Decorate with edible blood gel for a more gruesome appearance.
