A simple, make-ahead layered salad featuring crisp vegetables, bacon, cheese, and a creamy dressing, perfect for potlucks and gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 head iceberg lettuce, chopped
  • 1 cup chopped celery
  • 1 cup chopped red onion
  • 1 cup frozen peas, thawed
  • 1 cup shredded carrots
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 6 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 2 tablespoons white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Prepare the dressing: In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, sour cream, vinegar, sugar, salt, and pepper until smooth. Set aside.
  2. Wash and chop all vegetables. Thaw the peas completely and drain any excess moisture.
  3. In a large, clear glass bowl (at least 3 quarts), begin layering the ingredients in the following order: lettuce, celery, red onion, peas, carrots, cheddar cheese, and finally, the crumbled bacon on top.
  4. Spread the prepared creamy dressing evenly over the top layer of bacon. Do not mix the layers.
  5. Cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld and the dressing to set.
  6. When ready to serve, remove the plastic wrap and serve directly from the bowl, scooping down through all the layers.

Notes

  • You can assemble this salad up to 24 hours in advance. Keep it covered in the refrigerator.
  • Use a glass bowl so you can see the distinct layers.
  • If you prefer a tangier dressing, increase the vinegar slightly.
